  • Cannot datalog

    I'm trying to datalog my 1998 Dakota with my X3 3200. I connect to the laptop and the vehicle, but LiveLink will not communicate with the vehicle (communication is with device only). I uninstalled and reinstalled LiveLink, Uninstalled and reinstalled Device Updater and checked to make sure proper drivers were present and installed. The SCT handheld unit shows the comm and strategy but will not get it to LiveLink.I called SCT and we checked everything, did battery shutdown maneuver and they could not fix the issue (said to keep trying). Anyone have any suggestions?

    Jerry,

    are you able to communicate with the device on the device updater? where you can see the device info under-display device settings and serial number with the updater? What's happening is that you are having issues unlocking the ECU due to the communication method they used back then. Is not much of a device or software issue. You will need to do a couple of battery reset and ensure that you have the batteries on charge as it does take a while for you to be able to unlock it. I personally have had to do a battery reset on those up to 1hr before you can unlock the ECU.

      Jerry,

      Also, please be sure that when you are doing the battery reset you are unplugging the positive terminal from the battery, turning on the headlights, and pushing and holding the brake pedal for 3mins. Once that timer is up release the brake pedal and turns the headlights off. Reconnect the battery terminal and go into vehicle functions and clear DTC and re-attempt again :)

        Updater shows tune revision, EEC Type, serial number, firmware, etc. Was previously instructed to do the battery reset for 5 minutes....which gave no results (removed both positive and negative terminals). So you suggest doing a 1 hour reset but run the headlights and hold brake for the first 3 minutes of the 1 hour disconnection?

          After disconnecting the battery and turning on the headlights and holding the brakes for 3 minutes, I left the battery disconnected all night with the headlight switch on (I forgot to turn the switch off). I talked with you on the telephone, returned to the vehicle and held the brake another 3 minutes. I opened LiveLink, connected the SCT to the computer and to the OBD port and checked communication and it said "device only". I reconnected the battery, disconnected and reconnected to the computer and the OBD port and got the same message. I checked for DTCs and there were none present. What can I do next?

            @jerry

            I would recommend attempting to cycling the keys and attempting to check for comms. Please attempt to do the battery reset several times while trying to unlock the ECU. As just doing the battery reset 1 time might not be sufficient.

              What do you mean when you say "cycling the keys"?

                Jerry,

                meaning cycling your key from the OFF position to the ON position. And checking for comms again. You are turning the key on and off every time you don't find comms, correct?

                  OK. I have reset the computer 4 times and keyed the ignition multiple times with each reset. LiveLink still reads "device only" every time. What else can I do?

                    I downloaded LiveLink GenII on another laptop and tried several times to reset the truck computer and keying the ignition after each failure. Still will not communicate with vehicle. What other datalog software works since this one is hopeless?
